NEW PHILADELPHIA – Tuscarawas County leaders are making a final push for the 1% sales tax renewal on Tuesday’s ballot. Commissioner Chris Abbuhl says the sales tax represents 57% of the annual general fund budget, generating about $13 million every year, with much of that coming from tourists. He says relying heavily on the sales tax has allowed the board to keep other taxes low. He encourages visiting the Tuscarawas County website to see exactly how tax dollars are being spent.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – County Board of Elections officials are getting ready for the May Primary coming up Tuesday. Director Allan Sayre says there is still a need for poll workers to keep lines flowing smoothly. Anyone who can vote in Ohio is eligible to man the polling locations, which will be equipped with new electronic poll books this year instead of the paper sign-in sheets. Anyone interested can contact the board of elections office. Polling locations will be open May 2nd from 6:30 a.m until 7:30 that evening.

DOVER – The Dover Rotary is moving closer to being able to install a large, old-fashioned style clock downtown. Rotary President Jim Gill says they have secured nearly half of the project’s $26,000 cost. The illuminated post clock would stand 16-feet tall with four faces to it. The plan is to install it on the quadrant near the police station possibly by September. Fundraisers continue, including the Dover Chocolate Walk on May 20th

COLUMBUS (AP) – The mother of an Ohio teen says prison is not the right place for her daughter's boyfriend, who has pleaded guilty to accidentally killing the girl while mishandling a gun. The Columbus Dispatch reports Thomas Gutierrez was sentenced to six years in prison on Tuesday, despite a request for leniency from the deceased girl's mother. Darian Newman, of Hilliard, said she worries prison might turn the 19-year-old into "something he wasn't already."

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump's plan to provide massive tax breaks to corporations faces big challenges as Washington struggles with mounting debt. The populist president is also trying to make good on promises to bring jobs and prosperity to the middle class. Today he is unveiling the broad outlines of a tax overhaul that would reduce the top corporate tax rate from 35% to 15%.
